Origins

The current form of the Slovak national flag was adopted in 1993, after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.

Pan-Slavic Colors

The flag features the traditional Pan-Slavic tricolor of white, blue, and red. These colors represent:

  • White: Peace and honesty
  • Blue: Loyalty and vigilance
  • Red: Bravery and strength

Coat of Arms

The off-center coat of arms on the flag depicts a double cross of the Hungarian royal family on a red background, representing Slovakia's historical ties to Hungary.

Historical Significance

From 1918 to 1993, Czechoslovakia used a common flag with a blue and red bicolour and a white triangle representing Slovakia. The current Slovak flag was formally adopted on September 1, 1993.

Symbolism and Meaning

The Slovak flag is a symbol of national unity, independence, and pride. The Pan-Slavic colors represent Slovakia's connections to other Slavic nations, while the coat of arms showcases its unique history.
